IFJC Presents Family Law CLE Seminar to Multilingual Attorneys
On February 1, 2019, the IFJC sponsored a CLE Seminar titled, “Family Law for International Marriages.” Presenters Naoko Inoue Shatz and Anthony David Gipes discussed substantive and procedural family law issues in the context of representing foreign spouses with limited English speaking abilities. Ms. Shatz also highlighted important International Hague law issues.
Attendees included multilingual Washington attorneys and Limited License Legal Technicians (LLLT):
Usama Ahmed
Makiko Coffland
John G. Gissberg
John Roderick Kennedy III
Pattie Reutimann
Mei Shih
Larisa I. Shmulyan
Aaron Michael Streit
Jennifer Summerville
Norma Linda Urena
Each attendee had linguistic skills that included Chinese, German, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, and Urdu.
The Washington State Bar Association (WSBA) had previously recognized the IFJC as a Qualified Legal Service Provider (QLSP). Paige Hardy, Public Service Specialist at the WSBA, spoke to the attendees about the benefits of volunteering for QLSPs such as the IFJC.
The seminar was videoed so that it could be used for IFJC training of future volunteer attorneys and LLLTs.
The IFJC gives a heartfelt THANK YOU to all the attendees and hopes to build relationships with all of them into the future.
